Master Channel Strip
Version 1.4.0 · updated November 4, 2026Master Channel Strip is a live mastering plugin for the console master or the stereo bus of Live Rack. Nine modules in a fixed order, from bus compression to the final limiter, with loudness, RTA and phase meters, and at most 1 ms of latency. Made for live sound engineers who need a finished, consistent master, show after show.
Getting started
- Download Harmovant Audio Hub from harmovant.com/downloads. You need to log in to your Harmovant account (a free account is enough).
- Open the Hub, sign in and find Master Channel Strip in the product list.
- Click Install. The Hub downloads, checks and installs the AU and VST3 versions. It asks for the Mac administrator password once.
- Start the 14-day free trial or activate your license in the Hub. The plugin reads the license the Hub saves on this Mac.
- Open your host (Live Rack, or any app that loads AU or VST3 plugins) and rescan plugins if Master Channel Strip does not appear. It is listed under Harmovant Audio.
Insert Master Channel Strip on the stereo master: the master insert of your console's plugin host, or the master of Live Rack. Put it last in the chain, after any other processing, because the last module (MAXIMIZE) sets the final peak ceiling.
A new instance opens on the first factory preset (Worship Arena) with LIVE at 0.5 ms. Pick the preset closest to your show, then adjust the BUS COMP THRESH and the MAXIMIZE THRESHOLD to the level coming from your console.
The factory presets were calibrated on a show mix at about −19 LUFS (≈ −18 dBFS RMS). If your master runs hotter or quieter, move the two thresholds first, before touching anything else.
The screen
The window has four areas: the header at the top, the nine module panels in the middle, the meter column on the right (LOUDNESS, RTA, PHASE) and the footer at the bottom.
| Control | Range | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| ◀ ▶ ▾ (preset) | Previous / next preset, and the preset menu (FACTORY, Init, USER, save). | |
| A / B / A→B | Two settings to compare. A→B (or B→A) copies the current slot to the other one. | |
| ↶ ↷ | Undo and redo. | |
| OUT | Output peak meter. | |
| LEVEL MATCH | on / off (on) | When BYPASS is on, the unprocessed signal gets the gain that matches the processed loudness (slow average, about 3 s), so you compare sound, not volume. The footer shows the offset. |
| BYPASS | on / off (off) | Bypasses the whole chain, with a crossfade. The bypassed signal stays time-aligned and passes through a safety limiter, so it does not clip. |
| LIVE | 0 / 0.5 / 1 ms (0.5) | Look-ahead of the MAXIMIZE, which is the total latency of the plugin. See 'Latency and live use'. |
| HQ 2× | on / off (off) | 2× oversampling on TUBE, SATURATE and INFLATE. Adds about 12 samples of latency, reported to the host. |
| ⤢ | 70 / 85 / 100 / 115 / 130 % | Window size. 85 % is the default; the size is saved with the project. |
| LED (module header) | on / off | Each module has a power LED next to its number. Click it to switch the module on or off, with a crossfade. |
Footer: LATENCY (ms and samples), CHAIN 1–8 (0 smp, or IIR 2× when HQ is on), sample rate, license status when it needs attention, LEVEL MATCH offset and plugin version.
- Knobs: drag up or down. Hold Shift for fine adjustment. The mouse wheel also works. Double-click returns to the default value.
- Stepped knobs (ATTACK, RELEASE, RATIO, frequencies): drag, use the wheel or click a value on the scale.
- All interface text is in English, the Harmovant standard.
01 BUS COMP
Console-style bus compressor (VCA, linked peak detection, short knee) to glue the mix. Zero latency. The needle meter shows gain reduction from 0 to 20 dB (dB COMPRESSION).
| Control | Range | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| THRESH | −15 to +15 (0) | Threshold on a panel scale: 0 = −29 dBFS peak. Lower values compress more, higher values compress less. |
| MAKE UP | −5 to +15 dB (0) | Gain after the compressor. |
| MIX | 0–100 % (100) | Blend of compressed and dry signal (parallel compression), in phase. |
| ATTACK | .1 / .3 / 1 / 3 / 10 / 30 ms (30) | Attack time. Slow settings let the transients through. |
| RELEASE | .1 / .3 / .6 / 1.2 s / AUTO (AUTO) | Release time. AUTO is program-dependent, in two stages (fast and slow). |
| RATIO | 2:1 / 4:1 / 10:1 (2:1) | Compression ratio. 2:1 has the widest knee; 10:1 has almost none. |
| SC OFF / 60 / 90 / 150 | Hz (OFF) | High-pass filter on the detector only. Stops kick and bass from driving the compression. |
| M/S | on / off (off) | Detects and compresses Mid and Side independently instead of linked stereo. |
1 to 3 dB of reduction on the needle is the usual range for glue on a live master.
02 PASSIVE EQ
Program-style passive EQ: a low section with boost and cut at the same frequency, a high bell with bandwidth, and a high shelf cut. Clean, no harmonics. Zero latency.
| Control | Range | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| LOW FREQ | 20 / 30 / 60 / 100 Hz (60) | Frequency of the low section. |
| BOOST | 0–10 (0) | Low boost. |
| ATTEN | 0–10 (0) | Low cut at the same frequency. BOOST and ATTEN interact like a passive network: used together they reshape the low end instead of cancelling each other. |
| HIGH FREQ | 3 / 4 / 5 / 8 / 10 / 12 / 16 kHz (12) | Centre of the high boost. |
| HI BOOST | 0–10 (0) | High bell boost. |
| BANDWIDTH | 0–10 (5) | Width of the high boost: 0 = narrow, 10 = wide. |
| ATTEN SEL | 5 / 10 / 20 kHz (20) | Frequency of the high cut. |
| HI ATTEN | 0–10 (0) | High shelf cut. |
| HPF OFF / 18 / 30 | Hz (OFF) | High-pass filter to remove subsonic content. |
| M/S | on / off (off) | The low section works only on the Mid, so the Side low end stays clean. |
03 TUBE
Series tube stage: a pentode and a triode, a parallel saturation circuit and an air band. The output level is compensated: the knobs change colour and compression, not the volume. Zero latency (2× oversampling with HQ).
| Control | Range | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| PENTODE | 0–10 (5 = neutral) | Drive into the first tube. |
| TRIODE | 0–10 (4 = neutral) | Drive into the second tube, which adds natural compression. |
| SATURATION | 0–10 (0) | Amount of the parallel saturation circuit. |
| AIR | 0–10 (0) | Gentle, very wide high lift. |
| AIR FREQ | 8–30 kHz (16k) | Frequency of the AIR band. |
| MIX | 0–100 % (100) | Blend of processed and dry signal. |
| FLAT / LOW / HIGH | (FLAT) | Frequency focus of the parallel saturation. |
| ALT | on / off (off) | Alternative tubes, more aggressive. |
04 SATURATE
3-band saturation with phase-flat crossovers. Each band has its own drive. Below about 2.4 dB of drive the sound stays clean. Zero latency (2× oversampling with HQ).
| Control | Range | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| LOW | 0–24 dB (0) | Drive of the low band. |
| MID | 0–24 dB (0) | Drive of the mid band. |
| HIGH | 0–24 dB (0) | Drive of the high band. |
| XOVER | 60 Hz/2k – 400 Hz/8k | Moves both crossover points together: low/mid from 60 to 400 Hz, mid/high from 2 to 8 kHz. |
| MIX | 0–100 % (100) | Blend of saturated and dry signal, in phase. |
| OUTPUT | −12 to +12 dB (0) | Output level of the module. |
| TAPE / TUBE / WARM / CLIP | (TAPE) | Saturation style. CLIP is a mastering clipper. |
05 MB LIMIT
5-band limiter with zero latency. It calculates the total reduction needed and spreads it across the bands by their energy and by the priority you set on the faders: a band with higher priority is reduced less. Bands split at 100 Hz, 400 Hz, 2.5 kHz and 9 kHz. A wideband safety stage catches very fast peaks, and the MAXIMIZE comes after it.
| Control | Range | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| SUB / LOW / MID / HI / AIR | −12 to +12 (+1.2 / 0 / +0.5 / +0.6 / +0.9) | Priority faders, one per band, each with its gain-reduction meter. Double-click sets a fader to 0. |
| THRESH | −12 to 0 dB (−3) | Lowering it raises the input gain into the limiter (more density and level). |
| CEILING | −6 to 0 dB (−1) | Ceiling of the sum of the bands. |
| RELEASE | 5–1000 ms (80) | Manual release. Shows ARC while ARC is on. |
| MANUAL / ARC | (ARC) | ARC = automatic, program-dependent release. MANUAL uses the RELEASE knob. |
Factory presets do not change MB LIMIT: they all load its mastering default (THRESH −3, CEILING −1, ARC). You can still change it freely.
06 INFLATE
Transfer-curve shaper that adds perceived loudness and density without pumping. Zero latency (2× oversampling with HQ).
| Control | Range | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| EFFECT | 0–100 % (0) | Amount of the effect (blend of dry and shaped signal). At 0 the module is neutral. |
| CURVE | −50 to +50 (0) | Shape of the transfer curve. |
| INPUT | −6 to +12 dB (0) | Level into the shaper. |
| OUTPUT | −12 to +6 dB (0) | Output level of the module. |
| CLIP | on / off (on) | Clips at 0 dB before the shaper. |
| SPLIT | on / off (off) | Applies the shaper in 3 bands (240 Hz / 2.4 kHz). |
07 STEREO
Mid/Side control: width, mono low end, balance and side tilt, plus listen modes. Zero latency.
| Control | Range | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| WIDTH | 0–200 % (100) | Side level. 0 % = mono, 100 % = unchanged, 200 % = wider. |
| MONO BASS | OFF – 300 Hz (OFF) | Removes the Side below this frequency: mono low end, safer for a PA. |
| BALANCE | L100 – C – R100 (C) | Left/right balance. |
| S TILT | −6 to +6 dB (0) | Tilts the Side around 1 kHz. Positive = brighter Side. |
| ST / M / S / MONO | (ST) | Listen: stereo, Mid only, Side only or mono sum. Monitoring only: it is not saved and always comes back to ST. |
Leaving M, S or MONO on goes to the PA. Check that the selector is on ST before the show.
08 RESONANCE
Dynamic resonance control: 33 bands of 1/4 octave from 63 Hz to 16 kHz, detected on the Mid and applied with dynamic filters, with no FFT in the audio path, so zero latency. The sensitivity per frequency is a fixed factory curve; the controls below set how it reacts.
| Control | Range | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| SOFT / HARD | (HARD) | SOFT: the reduction does not depend on level. HARD: the reduction grows with level. |
| DEPTH | 0–10 (2) | How much the resonances are reduced. |
| DETAIL | 0–10 (5) | How narrow the cuts are. |
| ATTACK | 0–10 (2) | Reaction time. Higher = slower. Attack is faster in the highs. |
| RELEASE | 0–10 (5) | Recovery time. Higher = slower. |
| Δ DELTA | on / off (off) | Listen only to what the module removes. Monitoring only: not saved, always off when you reopen a project. |
The host's automation list also shows a Resonance Mix parameter (0–100 %), which blends the processed and dry signal. It has no knob on the panel.
09 MAXIMIZE
Final peak limiter. THRESHOLD raises the level into it, CEILING is the output ceiling. Its short look-ahead (set with LIVE in the header) is the only latency of the plugin. The needle meter shows LIMITER GR.
| Control | Range | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| THRESHOLD | −12 to 0 dB (0) | Lowering it adds gain into the limiter: more loudness and more limiting. |
| CEILING | −3 to 0 dB (−1) | Maximum output peak (true peak when TP is on). |
| RELEASE | AUTO – 1000 ms (AUTO) | AUTO is program-dependent, in two stages. Turn it up for a manual release time. |
| OUTPUT | −12 to 0 dB (0) | Level after the limiter. |
| CLEAN / PUNCH / LOUD | (PUNCH) | CLEAN: limiter only. PUNCH: adds a soft clipper and a faster release. LOUD: lower clipper and fast release. |
| TP | on / off (on) | True-peak detection (4× interpolation). Works with LIVE at 0.5 or 1 ms; at 0 ms the limiter has no look-ahead and controls sample peaks. |
| DITHER 16 / 24 / OFF | (OFF) | TPDF dither, gently noise-shaped, for a 16 or 24-bit output. Leave it OFF on a live master. |
Meters
The column on the right measures the output of the plugin.
| Control | Range | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| LOUDNESS · INTEGRATED | LUFS | Integrated loudness (EBU R128) since the last RESET, with the status ON TARGET (within ±1 LU), ABOVE or BELOW the selected target. |
| STREAM / HI-FI / VIDEO / CLUB | −14 / −16 / −14 / −8 LUFS | Loudness targets. The selected one also marks the short-term bar (S). |
| SHORT / MOMENTARY | LUFS | Short-term (3 s) and momentary (400 ms) loudness. |
| TRUE PEAK | dBTP | Highest true peak. The cell warns when it gets within 0.3 dB of the MAXIMIZE CEILING. |
| LRA | LU | Loudness range. |
| PLR | dB | Peak to loudness ratio: how much dynamic headroom is left. |
| TIME / ⟲ RESET | Measurement time. RESET restarts the integrated measurement (do it when the show starts). | |
| RTA | FAST / SLOW / HOLD / REF | 1/6-octave spectrum curve of the output. FAST or SLOW sets the speed, HOLD keeps the peak line, REF shows a tonal balance reference line. Hover the curve to read the frequency and level. |
| PHASE | −1 to +1 | Goniometer, CORRELATION (red when negative), MONO (level lost when summed to mono, in dB), stereo width and balance. |
The RTA display is shifted so that the 200 Hz to 2 kHz average sits on the REF line. Read it as tonal balance, not as absolute level.
Presets
10 factory presets, calibrated on a show mix at about −19 LUFS with 1 to 3 dB of reduction on the BUS COMP and the MAXIMIZE at the target loudness of each style (−9.3 to −16 LUFS).
| Control | Range | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Worship Arena | Large worship productions: wide pads, controlled low end, airy vocals. | |
| Gospel Choir Power | Gospel with choir, organ and hard-hitting drums: full low mids and punch. | |
| Groove Live | Percussive, funk and Latin bands: hand percussion intact, round low drums, bright strummed guitars. | |
| Smooth R&B | R&B and soul ballads: vocal up front and velvety, silky highs, round bass. | |
| Hip Hop 808 | Hip hop and trap: big mono 808, punchy kick, loud without losing the low end. | |
| Rock Arena | Rock and pop rock: console glue, gritty guitars, cymbals under control. | |
| Pop Gloss | Modern pop: bright, wide, dense and smooth. | |
| Acoustic Natural | Acoustic and singer-songwriter: almost transparent, just glue and natural sheen. | |
| Live Stream -16 | Church and event streaming at −16 LUFS / −1 dBTP: steady level, clear speech and vocals, mono-safe low end. | |
| Transparent Safety | Any genre: modules 1 to 8 off, only the final true-peak limiter. Protects the system without changing the mix. |
- Init: every module at its default value.
- A preset does not change LIVE, HQ 2×, LEVEL MATCH, BYPASS or the listen modes.
- User presets: open the preset menu, type a name in 'Save current sound as…' and click SAVE. The ⋯ button shows the folder (~/Music/Harmovant/Master Channel Strip/Presets, files .hvmc).
Latency and live use
Modules 1 to 8 run at zero latency. The only latency is the look-ahead of the MAXIMIZE, chosen with LIVE in the header, and it is always reported to the host for delay compensation.
| Control | Range | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| LIVE 0 | 0 samples | No look-ahead. Instant attack; the limiter controls sample peaks, not true peaks. |
| LIVE 0.5 | 24 samples at 48 kHz | Default. Smooth limiting with true-peak detection. |
| LIVE 1 ms | 48 samples at 48 kHz | Longest look-ahead: the cleanest limiting. |
| HQ 2× | + about 12 samples | 2× oversampling on TUBE, SATURATE and INFLATE. |
- Switching LIVE, TP or HQ while playing does not create gaps or clicks. Module on/off and BYPASS are crossfaded.
- BYPASS, the listen modes (M, S, MONO) and Δ DELTA always come back off when you reopen a project.
- The bypassed signal is delayed by the same latency, so BYPASS does not shift the timing, and it goes through a safety limiter.
Live tips
- Start from a preset, then set the BUS COMP THRESH for 1 to 3 dB on the needle and the MAXIMIZE THRESHOLD for the loudness you want.
- Use BYPASS with LEVEL MATCH on to judge the processing at equal loudness.
- For the PA, MONO BASS between 100 and 150 Hz keeps the low end centred.
- For a live stream feed, start from Live Stream -16, select the HI-FI target (−16) and press RESET when the service or show starts.
- If you only need protection, use Transparent Safety: the final limiter only.
- If the RESONANCE sounds too active, lower DEPTH or switch to SOFT. Use Δ DELTA to hear exactly what it takes out.
License and activation
- Lifetime license, paid once, with lifetime updates: every new version of this plugin is included, with no yearly fee.
- Stage Pass, the Harmovant plugin subscription, also unlocks it.
- Up to 2 Macs at the same time on one license.
- 14-day free trial on each Mac, started in Harmovant Audio Hub.
- Installation and activation are done only in Harmovant Audio Hub. The plugin checks the license on the Mac, without internet. It needs internet only to activate and, every few weeks, to confirm the license; it works offline in between.
Without a valid license the plugin always loads, in demo mode: it plays normally but inserts 2 seconds of silence every 20 seconds, with short fades. A status strip and an OPEN HUB button appear at the bottom of the window (OPEN HUB opens the Hub, or harmovant.com/downloads if the Hub is not installed). The strip disappears when the license is fine.
It does not cut the audio in the middle of a show. If a license ends while you are playing, the plugin keeps running until the next long pause, and warnings appear days before.
Troubleshooting
| Control | Range | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Plugin not in the host | Install it from the Hub, then rescan plugins in the host. The plugin is Apple Silicon only. | |
| 2 s gaps of silence | Demo mode: there is no valid license on this Mac. See the message in the footer and open the Hub. | |
| Too loud or too much limiting | The preset expects a mix around −19 LUFS. Raise the BUS COMP THRESH and the MAXIMIZE THRESHOLD (towards 0) until the needles calm down. | |
| Only Mid, Side or mono is heard | The STEREO listen selector is on M, S or MONO. Set it to ST. | |
| Thin, odd sound | Δ DELTA is on in RESONANCE: you only hear what is being removed. Switch it off. | |
| TRUE PEAK above the ceiling | Check that TP is on and LIVE is at 0.5 or 1 ms. At LIVE 0 only sample peaks are controlled. | |
| DEMO - not activated on this Mac | Open Harmovant Audio Hub and start the trial or activate the license on this Mac. | |
| DEMO - licence belongs to another Mac | The license file is for a different Mac. Activate this Mac in the Hub (up to 2 Macs at the same time). | |
| DEMO - licence could not be verified | Open the Hub and activate again. | |
| DEMO - licence needs a refresh | Update and open the Hub so it refreshes the license. | |
| Connect to the internet within N days | The offline period is ending. Open the Hub once with internet to confirm the license. | |
| The Mac clock looks wrong | Set date and time automatically in macOS, then open the Hub with internet. | |
| Free trial - N days left | Information only: the trial is running. Buy at harmovant.com before it ends. |
