Drums Channel Strip
Version 0.5.0 · updated November 4, 2026Drums Channel Strip is a full drum channel in one plugin: gate, console EQ, transient shaper, a 12-band dynamic EQ and a compressor with two models. Use it on every close mic and on the drum bus. In LIVE mode it runs at zero latency, and every change is click-free.
Getting started
Drums Channel Strip is installed and activated through Harmovant Audio Hub. You do not download the plugin from the website: the Hub downloads, checks and installs it for you.
- Go to harmovant.com/downloads, sign in (a free Harmovant account is enough) and download Harmovant Audio Hub for macOS.
- Open the Hub and sign in with the same account.
- Find Drums Channel Strip in the Hub and click Install. macOS asks for your administrator password once. The plugin goes to /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components (AU) and /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/VST3.
- Activate it: use your purchased licence, a Stage Pass subscription, or start the 14-day free trial on this Mac.
- Open your host (DAW or live host), rescan plugins if needed and insert "Drums Channel Strip" (listed under Harmovant Audio) on the channel.
The footer of the plugin shows the licence state. If it says DEMO, see the Licence and Troubleshooting sections.
The screen
The window has five areas:
- Header: PRESET display with ◀ ▶, A / B / A→B, undo ↶ and redo ↷, IN and OUT LED meters, and the LIVE / HQ switch.
- CHAIN bar: the five stages in processing order. Drag to reorder, Alt-click or right-click to bypass. Each slot has a small gain-reduction bar.
- EQ display: spectrum analyser (PRE EQ and POST EQ) behind the 12-band EQ.
- Module cards: GATE, CONSOLE, TRANSIENT and COMP. Each card has its own on/off switch in the header.
- OUTPUT column: IN / GR / OUT meters, Output, Mix, AUTO GAIN and Ø (polarity).
The footer shows the mode (LIVE or HQ), the latency in samples, the sample rate, the version and the licence state.
A new instance opens flat (Init): gate open, EQs flat, transient neutral. Only the compressor is on, at its starting values. You start from your mic, not from a preset.
Chain order and bypass
Default order: GATE > CONSOLE > TRANSIENT > COMP > EQ (EQ last).
- Drag a stage in the CHAIN bar to move it. The change is made during a very short duck, with no click.
- ⟲ DEFAULT ORDER returns to the default order.
- Alt-click or right-click a stage to bypass it (or use the switch on its card). Bypass is crossfaded.
- The order is saved with the session, with A/B and with presets.
GATE
Gate and expander for close mics. The header LED shows OPEN or CLOSED. A gate opening and reopening near the threshold does not click.
| Control | Range | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Thresh | -80 to 0 dB (default -80 dB = open) | Level that opens the gate. |
| Range | 0 to 80 dB (default 50 dB) | Maximum attenuation when closed. Small values = expander that only lowers the bleed. |
| Ratio | 1:1 to 100:1 (100 = Gate; default 10:1) | Expansion ratio below the threshold. At the top it is a full gate. |
| Hyst | 0 to 24 dB (default 0) | Hysteresis: the gate closes this much lower than it opens. Stops chatter on decaying toms and snare ring. |
| Attack | 0.01 to 100 ms (default 1 ms) | Opening time. |
| Hold | 0 to 500 ms (default 2 ms) | Time the gate stays open after the signal drops. |
| Release | 5 ms to 3 s (default 100 ms) | Time to fall to the full range. |
| Knee | 0 to 24 dB (default 0) | Softness around the threshold. |
| SC HPF | 20 Hz to 2 kHz (default 20 Hz) | High-pass on the detector. Example: key a snare gate off its crack so the kick does not open it. |
| SC LPF | 500 Hz to 20 kHz (default 20 kHz) | Low-pass on the detector. Example: key a kick gate off the low end so cymbals do not open it. |
| Look (HQ) | 0 to 10 ms (default 2 ms) | Lookahead: the gate opens before the hit. Works only in HQ mode (the knob is dimmed in LIVE) and adds that time as latency. |
| INT / EXT | Internal, External (default INT) | Detector source: the channel itself, or the plugin's sidechain input (route it in your host). |
| LISTEN | on / off | Hear the detector signal (after SC HPF / LPF). Switch it off before the show. |
CONSOLE
A console channel: input gain, high- and low-pass filters, a 4-band EQ with two characters (BROWN and BLACK), console harmonics (THD) and output.
| Control | Range | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Input | -10 to +10 dB (default 0) | Level into the console stage. More input = more THD effect. |
| HPF | 16 to 350 Hz (default 60 Hz), 18 dB/oct | High-pass filter. The knob shows the real -3 dB frequency. Switch it on with the HPF button. |
| LPF | 3 to 22 kHz (default 22 kHz), 12 dB/oct | Low-pass filter. Switch it on with the LPF button. |
| HPF / LPF buttons | on / off (default off) | Switch each filter on or off. |
| Low | -15 to +15 dB | Low band gain (shelf, or bell with LF BELL). |
| LF Freq | 30 to 450 Hz (default 100 Hz) | Low band frequency. |
| LF BELL | on / off | Turns the low band from shelf into bell. |
| Lo-Mid | -15 to +15 dB | Low-mid bell gain. |
| LMF Freq | 200 Hz to 2.5 kHz (default 400 Hz) | Low-mid frequency. |
| LMF Q | 0.5 to 3 (default 1.5) | Low-mid bandwidth. |
| Hi-Mid | -15 to +15 dB | High-mid bell gain. |
| HMF Freq | 600 Hz to 7 kHz (default 3 kHz) | High-mid frequency. |
| HMF Q | 0.5 to 3 (default 1.5) | High-mid bandwidth. |
| High | -15 to +15 dB | High band gain (shelf, or bell with HF BELL). |
| HF Freq | 1.5 to 16 kHz (default 8 kHz) | High band frequency. |
| HF BELL | on / off | Turns the high band from shelf into bell. |
| BROWN / BLACK | Brown, Black (default Black) | EQ character. BROWN is gentler and wider; BLACK is deeper. |
| THD | 0 to 10 (default 0) | Console harmonics, mostly 3rd harmonic. 0 = clean. |
| Output | -20 to +10 dB (default 0) | Output level of the console stage. |
TRANSIENT
Transient shaper with two detectors. CLASSIC is continuous: it reacts to the level rising (attack) and falling (sustain); the attack side needs some level to act. SMACK is triggered: each hit opens an attack window with a shape, and the sustain side works on the decay. SMACK is level independent. Zero latency in both.
| Control | Range | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| CLASSIC / SMACK | Classic, Smack (default Classic) | Detector style. The SMACK-only controls appear when SMACK is selected. |
| Attack | -100% to +100% (default 0) | More (+) or less (-) attack. In CLASSIC, ±100% = about ±15 dB. |
| Sustain | -100% to +100% (default 0) | More (+) or less (-) sustain/ring. In CLASSIC, ±100% = about ±24 dB. |
| Att Sens | 0 to 100 (default 60), SMACK | Which hits qualify. 0 = almost none; 50 and above = every hit. |
| Att Dur | 0.5 to 500 ms (default 8 ms), SMACK | Length of the attack window. |
| NEEDLE / NAIL / BLUNT | default NAIL, SMACK | Attack shape. NEEDLE: on for the duration, then off fast. NAIL: on, then a slower tail. BLUNT: a delayed swell. |
| Sus Sens | 0 to 100 (default 80), SMACK | Sensitivity of the sustain detector. |
| Sus Dur | 30 to 1000 ms (default 200 ms), SMACK | Length of the sustain action. |
| SC HPF | 20 Hz to 1 kHz (default 20 Hz) | High-pass on the detector, so kick bleed does not trigger a snare channel. |
| Mix | 0 to 100% (default 100%) | Blend of dry and processed signal. |
| Output | -24 to +24 dB (default 0) | Output level of the stage. |
| OFF / CLIP / LIMIT | default OFF | Output guard at -0.1 dBFS: none, clipper or limiter. Useful when you add a lot of attack. |
EQ (dynamic EQ)
The EQ has 12 bands drawn over a spectrum analyser. Each band can be static, dynamic (it moves only when the signal crosses a threshold) or spectral. Every filter is minimum-phase IIR: zero latency in every mode.
- Colours: static bands are champagne, dynamic bands purple, spectral bands orange. The ring around a node shows the dynamic range; its stroke shows the current action.
- Double-click empty space: create a band. Double-click a node: delete it.
- Drag a node: frequency and gain. Hold Shift for fine moves.
- Alt-drag a node: solo the band while you hold the mouse button.
- Cmd-drag a node: set the dynamic range (the band becomes dynamic).
- Mouse wheel over a node: Q. Cmd + wheel: range.
- Right-click a node: band menu (Shape, Slope, Stereo Placement, Dynamic, Spectral, Auto Threshold, External Sidechain, Delete Band).
Clicking a node opens the band panel under it, split into EQ and DYNAMICS:
| Control | Range | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Shape | Bell, Low Shelf, High Shelf, Low Cut, High Cut, Notch, Band Pass, Tilt Shelf | Filter type of the band. |
| Freq | 10 Hz to 30 kHz | Centre or corner frequency. |
| Gain | -30 to +30 dB | Static gain of the band (not used by cut, notch and band-pass shapes). |
| Q | 0.025 to 40 | Bandwidth. Higher Q = narrower band. |
| Slope | 6, 12, 18, 24, 36, 48, 72, 96 dB/oct | Steepness of Low Cut and High Cut bands (band menu). |
| ST / L / R / M / S | Stereo, Left, Right, Mid, Side | Which part of the stereo signal the band processes. |
| DYNAMIC | on / off | Makes the band dynamic: it adds Range only when the level in the band passes the threshold. |
| SPECTRAL | on / off | Splits the band into up to 16 sub-bands of 1/6 octave. Only a sub-band that sticks out above its neighbours is turned down: good for resonances. Zero latency (filter bank, no FFT). |
| AUTO | on / off | Automatic threshold: learns the typical level of the band. Off = use Thresh. |
| Thresh | -80 to 0 dB | Manual threshold of the dynamic band. |
| Range | -30 to +30 dB | How much the dynamic band cuts (negative) or boosts (positive) at full action. |
| Attack | 0.1 to 500 ms | How fast the dynamic band reacts. |
| Release | 5 to 5000 ms | How fast it returns. |
| Knee | 0 to 30 dB | Softness of the transition around the threshold. |
| ABOVE / BELOW | Above, Below | Act when the level goes above the threshold (usual) or below it. |
| BAND / EXT | Band, External | Detector source: the band itself, or the plugin's sidechain input (set the sidechain in your host). |
The analyser can show the spectrum before the EQ (PRE EQ) and after it (POST EQ). A new instance starts with no bands: double-click to add the first one.
COMP
A compressor with two models behind the 160 / XT switch. 160 is a VCA compressor with an RMS detector, hard knee, program-dependent attack and a constant-rate release: punchy on kick and snare, glue on a bus. XT drives the signal into a fixed threshold, with eight ratio characters, attack and release from 0 to 10, built-in make-up gain and optional distortion. The card has a VU for gain reduction.
| Control | Range | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| 160 / XT | 160, XT (default 160) | Compressor model. Each model shows its own controls. |
| Thresh | -60 to +10 dB (default -18.2 dB), 160 | Threshold, in dBFS of a sine peak. |
| Ratio | 1:1 to ∞:1 (default 4:1), 160 | Compression ratio. |
| Input | -18 to +18 dB (default 0), XT | Drive into the fixed threshold. More input = more compression. |
| Attack | 0 to 10 (default 5), XT | Attack time. |
| Release | 0 to 10 (default 5), XT | Release time. |
| 1 / 2 / 3 / 4 / 6 / 10 / 20 / NK | default 6, XT | Ratio character. 1 = no compression, colour only; 2, 3, 4 soft; 6 medium; 10 slower and smoother; 20 limiting; NK (NUKE) brickwall. |
| CLN / D2 / D3 | Clean, Dist 2, Dist 3 (default Clean), XT | Distortion type: clean, or two harmonic characters. |
| Drive | 0 to 10 (default 0), XT | Amount of distortion. |
| EMPH | on / off (default off), XT | Sidechain emphasis around 6 kHz: the compressor reacts more to the high mids. |
| SC HPF | 20 to 500 Hz (default 20 Hz) | High-pass on the detector, so the low end pumps less. |
| Output | -24 to +24 dB (default 0) | Output level of the compressor. |
| Mix | 0 to 100% (default 100%) | Parallel compression, phase-aligned (zero latency). |
OUTPUT
| Control | Range | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Output | -24 to +24 dB (default 0) | Final output level. |
| Mix | 0 to 100% (default 100%) | Global dry/wet of the whole chain. The dry signal is latency-compensated (also in HQ). |
| AUTO GAIN | on / off (default off) | Matches the output level to the input level. |
| Ø | on / off (default off) | Inverts the polarity at the input, so every stage sees the flipped signal. 5 ms glide: flipping while playing does not click. Use it to align a snare bottom or kick out mic with the rest of the kit. |
| Input | -24 to +24 dB (default 0) | Input gain before the chain. It has no knob on screen: use your host's automation or parameter list. |
Presets
The factory presets were calibrated on a live multitrack (kick around -28 dBFS RMS, -6 dBFS peak): the output lands within about ±3 dB of the input with peaks under -2 dBFS. On another console or recording, set the gate Thresh and the level into the plugin first.
- Init (flat): the neutral starting point of a new instance.
- Kick In - Punch & Click (Kick): inside kick mic; gate keyed on the low end, box scooped at 350 Hz, beater click at 4 kHz, extra attack from TRANSIENT in SMACK mode, 160 for punch.
- Kick Out - Deep Thump (Kick): outside kick mic; weight at 60 Hz, less attack, longer sustain, gentle 160.
- Snare Top - Crack (Snare): fast gate with short hold, body at 200 Hz, crack at 5 kHz, CLASSIC attack, XT 4:1 for snap.
- Snare Bottom - Wires (Snare): hard high-pass, only the wires (4-8 kHz), gated, no compression.
- Toms - Gated Boom (Toms): rack tom; gate with a musical release, cardboard cut at 400 Hz, stick at 4 kHz.
- Floor Tom - Big (Toms): deep fundamental around 80 Hz, long hold and release so the note rings, SMACK sustain for size.
- Hi-Hat - Clean & Bright (Cymbals): high-pass at 250 Hz against kick and snare bleed, 2-3 kHz tamed, light air, no gate.
- Overheads - Wide Cymbals (Cymbals): keeps the kit image, low cut at 100 Hz, smooth 3 kHz, air on top, slow glue on the 160.
- Room - Smashed (Room & Bus): XT NUKE with fast attack, Dist 3 for grit; blend with Mix.
- Drum Bus - Glue (Room & Bus): 160 at 2:1 with 2-4 dB of gain reduction, light console colour, a touch of low and top.
- Drum Bus - Aggressive (Room & Bus): XT 6:1 with Dist 2, 50% parallel, attack shaped by the transient shaper, bright top.
- Live - Safe Kit Channel (Live): starting point for any close mic on stage; gentle gate (10 dB range), HPF 60 Hz, mild 160, nothing extreme.
- ◀ ▶ step through the factory presets. Click the preset name for the menu: Init (flat), factory presets by category, your presets, Save Preset As... and Open Presets Folder.
- Your presets are saved as .hvdc files in ~/Music/Harmovant/Drums Channel Strip/Presets.
Loading a factory preset resets every parameter not stored in it to its default, including LIVE / HQ (back to LIVE) and Ø (off). Check both after loading.
LIVE / HQ and latency
| Control | Range | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| LIVE | 0 samples | Default mode. Every filter is minimum-phase IIR, no FFT and no lookahead. Use it for every drum mic on stage. |
| HQ | Look (HQ): 0 to 10 ms | Enables the gate lookahead (default 2 ms = 96 samples at 48 kHz). The latency is reported to the host; the global Mix and bypassed stages are compensated. |
- Switching LIVE / HQ while playing is safe.
- If HQ is on, all drum channels should use the same setting, or your host must compensate the latency, so the mics stay aligned.
- No clicks: stage bypass is crossfaded; reorder, presets and A/B use a short duck; the polarity flip glides over 5 ms.
Tips for the stage: start from Live - Safe Kit Channel or the preset for the position; set the gate Thresh while the drummer plays the kit, then add Hyst if toms chatter; use the SC filters so other drums do not open the gate; on the bus, aim for 2-4 dB of gain reduction.
A/B, undo and reset
| Control | Range | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| A / B | two slots | Two complete settings (parameters and chain order). Click A or B to switch; the switch is click-free. |
| A→B | Copies the active slot to the other slot. | |
| ↶ / ↷ | Undo and redo parameter changes. | |
| Double-click a knob | Returns the knob to its default value. |
Meters
- Header IN and OUT: LED ladders (green, amber, red).
- OUTPUT column: IN, GR (total gain reduction) and OUT meters, with numeric values below.
- CHAIN bar: a thin gain-reduction bar under each stage.
- GATE card: OPEN / CLOSED LED.
- COMP card: VU meter of the compressor's gain reduction.
- EQ display: PRE EQ and POST EQ spectrum.
Licence
- One-time purchase: a lifetime licence with lifetime updates. Every new version of the plugin is included, with no renewal.
- A Stage Pass subscription also unlocks Drums Channel Strip.
- One licence runs on 2 Macs at the same time.
- 14-day free trial per Mac, started in Harmovant Audio Hub.
- Activation and installation are done in Harmovant Audio Hub. The Hub writes the licence file to the Mac and renews it in the background.
- The plugin checks the licence on the Mac, without internet. It keeps working offline for weeks. Before the offline window ends, the footer says "Connect to the internet within N days": open the Hub with internet once.
Without a valid licence the plugin still loads and keeps your settings, but runs in DEMO mode: 2 seconds of silence every 20 seconds, with short fades (never a hard cut). The footer shows the state in red (for example "DEMO - NOT ACTIVATED ON THIS MAC") and an OPEN HUB button, which opens Harmovant Audio Hub (or harmovant.com/downloads if the Hub is not installed).
The plugin never cuts the audio in the middle of a show: if a licence ends while audio is running, it keeps playing until a long pause. Only then does it switch to DEMO.
Troubleshooting
| Control | Range | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| DEMO - NOT ACTIVATED ON THIS MAC | DEMO | No licence for this Mac. Click OPEN HUB, sign in and activate the plugin, or start the 14-day trial. |
| DEMO - LICENCE NEEDS A REFRESH | DEMO | Update and open Harmovant Audio Hub; it rewrites the licence for this Mac. The plugin picks up the new file within seconds. |
| DEMO - LICENCE BELONGS TO ANOTHER MAC | DEMO | Activate this Mac in the Hub (2 Macs at the same time). |
| DEMO - LICENCE COULD NOT BE VERIFIED | DEMO | Open the Hub and activate again. |
| CONNECT TO THE INTERNET WITHIN N DAYS | Still working. Open the Hub with internet once so it renews the licence. | |
| THE MAC CLOCK LOOKS WRONG | Set date and time automatically in System Settings, then open the Hub with internet. | |
| Plugin not in the host | Check that the Hub finished the install and rescan plugins. Look under Harmovant Audio. Files: /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components/Drums Channel Strip.component and /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/VST3/Drums Channel Strip.vst3. The plugin runs on Apple Silicon: if your host is set to open with Rosetta, run it natively. | |
| Gate does not open | Thresh is too high for the level arriving, or INT / EXT is on EXT with no sidechain signal. Also check SC HPF / SC LPF. | |
| Mic out of time with the kit | HQ is on (gate lookahead adds latency). Switch to LIVE, or make sure the host compensates plugin latency. | |
| Only the detector signal is heard | LISTEN is on in GATE. Switch it off. | |
| Compression on a fresh instance | This is expected: in Init the compressor is on (160 at -18.2 dB, 4:1). Switch COMP off in the CHAIN bar if you do not want it. |
